I’m guessing you’re reading this because you have back or neck pain, or maybe you're suffering from repetitive strain injuries. You’re not alone – with the increase in home working since March 2020, more and more people are suffering from chronic work-related injuries.

But here’s the good news – you can get better. And you don’t have to rely on painkillers, massages or regular periods of stretching. I know from personal experience that there is another, more empowering way to get better.

When I was in my mid-20s I struggled with chronic lower back pain and severe sciatica. I was unable to walk comfortably and I couldn’t sit at a computer for any length of time. I had to take months off work and I doubted whether I would ever see improvement. But the Alexander Technique everything changed and I’m now able to move without pain, enjoy exercise and live life to the full.

Now I’d like to share some of the things with you that helped me so much.

I’m offering all potential clients a free 20-minute telephone or Zoom consultation to discuss your problem and how we can work to bring about change. To book this with no future obligations, visit my Contact page.

I have also created a free 3-step guide (below) featuring key advice to help get you back on track to better health.

This guide includes:

Let's get started with a very short article on sitting...

"The Alexander Technique works... I recommend it enthusiastically to anyone who has neck pains or back pain."

FORGET EVERYTHING YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT GOOD POSTURE

Before we discuss ways to sit at your desk with greater comfort, I'd like you to do a few things:

  • Forget about trying to "sit up straight".

  • Forget about to pull your shoulders back.

  • Forget about trying to find the perfect sitting position.

  • Forget the idea that good posture needs to be hard work.

None of this advice ever leads to long-term improvement in our posture. Sometimes it can even lead to further problems arising.

Try sitting up straight now, just as your parents or teachers told you to when you were young. Now imagine trying to stay like that all day behind a desk. Not achievable, is it? You’re probably over-engaging the muscles of your torso in order to prevent slouching. As a result, your back will quickly get tired and start to ache and your breathing will likely become restricted because you're not letting your ribs and diaphragm move freely. After a while you’ll collapse back into your habitual way of sitting because it becomes too much like hard work. So let's forget trying to sit up straight.

Instead, we need to redefine what good posture is in order to sit comfortably and pain-free. For me good posture is something that is dynamic, not passive; something that enables free movement, not restricts it; and something that you can maintain for as long as you need to without getting tired or achey.

The Alexander Technique can teach you how to sit well in this sustainable way. It can teach you recognise and release unnecessary muscular tensions that are damaging your posture, and help you gain more control over your postural habits to help prevent problems returning.
