Alexander Technique teachers don't just look at how to change your running form. We look at why your technique might cause injuries and impair performance, and we address how to reduce unnecessary tension and improve coordination, breathing and body awareness to enhance the way you run.

As a qualified 'Art of Running' instructor, certified by leading running coach and Alexander teacher Malcolm Balk, I teach the S.M.A.R.T. method. This stands for:

 

  • Skilful – Running technique is not set in stone, there are many ways we can improve and refine our skills.

  • Mindful – One of the most important factors is learning how to listen to our bodies and stay present in our environment as we run.

  • Athletic – Learn how to tap into your body's natural springiness to make your technique more effortless and less injury-prone.

  • Recreational – Above all else, running should be fun. Our greatest results are achieved when we look forward to running, rather than seeing it as a chore.

  • Transferable – Fitness should be functional. When you take Run SMART lessons you'll learn skills that can be used in every day life, not just running.​

The Alexander Technique will benefit anyone, whether they are an elite athlete or whether they just wish to live life without the aches and pains that many people suffer and accept as part of life. It is a pity that these techniques are not shown to us all at an early age for I have no doubt that this would alleviate many of the causes of ill health in our communities.
