Read on to find out more about the Alexander Technique and what it can do for you.
Used the world over by leading performers in the fields of music, sport, drama, singing and dance, the Alexander Technique encourages greater freedom of movement and reduced tension throughout the whole body, improving performance levels and reducing the risk of joint pain, Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs) and other musculoskeletal problems.
Multinational companies including Google, BBC, Hewlett Packard and Chanel have employed Alexander teachers to help staff cope with the challenges of office life, while the technique also stretches into fields as diverse as running, horse riding, playing music and helping
mothers-to-be through their pregnancy. It is also proven through gold standard randomised medical trials to help with chronic back pain, with research on its effectiveness published in the British Medical Journal.
The technique is not a therapy but a means of education. Rather than having a treatment done to you by a therapist, you will instead play an active role in understanding your movement habits and take more responsibility for your own health and wellbeing.
A series of lessons will teach you to incorporate the Alexander Technique into your daily life and enable you to have greater control over your own health and wellbeing. It is a skill that can help free us from automatic repetition of habit and provides us with choices of how we want to move, think and live our lives.
During your first lesson, we will discuss your history of injuries and other problems you may wish to address, as well as the reasons you are coming and what you are hoping to achieve. Lessons involve the teacher and client working together to explore movement and habits using a mix of gentle hands-on work, verbal explanations and simple but effective anatomy.
Each lesson is tailored to you, the client, and in them we will explore the way you use your body in simple everyday tasks such as walking, getting into and out of a chair and working at a desk. There may also include a period lying in a constructive rest position during which the teacher will work to encourage your back and other muscles to lengthen, widen and relax. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended to allow free movement.
Lessons are available in the Tonbridge School Centre, TN10 3AD on Tuesdays from September 2024 or at the London Centre for Alexander Technique and Training (LCATT) in Islington. They cost £45 for 45 minutes.
